Ecuador
UNDER DEVELOPMENT
In July 2013, my niece, Becca, and I took a 3 week trip to Ecuador that encompassed Quito, the Amazon region, the Andes (Otavalo in particular), and the Galapagos. Ecuador is an amazing country as a result of its diversity of climates and cultures. The people are charming and the use of the US dollar makes things super easy. We stayed in some great places, and I have provided links to those we recommend. Although part of Ecuador, the Galapagos needed its own gallery, and so those photos are provided separately. I have posted some short videos from the trip on vimeo. The photos are separated into several sections:

Amazonia
We spent a week in the Amazon basin at a lodge in the middle of the jungle called Sacha Lodge. It was great and I’d really recommend it for anyone (except those who really can’t walk over mud or get in and out of a canoe). Because we stayed on extra days beyond their “normal” trips (which are 4 days), we had private guides for about half of our stay. There are several videos from the amazon on my Ecuador video site: page 1, page 2, page 3.

Stinky Turkey
I don't know if that is the actual name, but that is what the guides called them.

Parrots at a salt lick at the Yasuni National Park
The more you look, the more birds you see
IMAGE 22
Dangerous caterpillar
The barbs on this caterpillar are extremely poisonous. We were instructed a wide birth when we saw one.
IMAGE 26
Mama Cayman
This cayman swam around the lagoon and under the communal huts. Although people swim in the lagoon during the day, the cayman is no worry.

Entry to Sacha Lodge
The swimming/dining platform at the entry to the property. Most (or perhaps all) of the buildings and walkways are on piles and elevated above the water and marsh.

Small frog that looks just like a leaf on the forrest floor
The guide put this one on the leaf so we could see it.
IMAGE 34
Leaf cutter ant gully
These ants had, over time, worn down a gully in the forrest floor through millions of tiny footsteps

Weavel at night
Proof that I can take a photo of a weavel at night through a telephoto lens. The light was from a flashlight. I couldn't get the whole animal in focus with the standard lense.
IMAGE 38
Night monkeys
Not the best photo, but they were fasinating animals that live well up in the trees.

Friendly donkey
We thougth it wanted Becca's apple and offered it. Actually, it was wanted to chat and a little scratch behind the ears.
